THE town has hosted pretty much everything else but now Killarney is readying itself to host its first ever full length marathon.
The marathon, which will start at the Castlerosse hotel on Saturday May 18, will take place entirely within the Knockreer Estate and on Ross Island, where the full 26mile distance will entail three laps of the course.
Run with the full support of local businesses, the Town Council, Failte Ireland, Chamber of Commerce and An Garda Siochana, the organisers are limiting both the full and the half marathon to 300 places each to ensure that the first running of this event is special for everyone and that it all goes off smoothly.
The event offers three options to cater for the various degrees of experience for runners, with a full, half and relay marathon option.
All routes will be fully measured and certified by Athletics Ireland and will be run according to their rules, while the event will be professionally timed.
The full marathon is €35 to enter, the half marathon is €25 and a 3-person marathon relay costs €60.
Entry includes a customised technical t-shirt, bespoke medal, medical cover, hydration and food stops and post-race refreshments.
Entries are now open at www.lakesofkillarneymarathon. Postal entry forms are also available to download on the site.
For those less inclined to compete, this first ever full marathon in KiIlarney will offer a spectator friendly environment in the National Park with many great viewing points.
