Gearing up for Valentia triathlon

ANOTHER year of a gruelling race that's fast becoming one of the top events of its kind in the region was launched this week amid great fanfare on Valentia.
Valentia Island Triathlon's official 2014 launch coincided with the annual training weekend for members of Valentia Island and Kenmare Triathlon Club, who added to the excitement no end.
Held on Valentia Island, the training weekend traditionally helps get rid of the cobwebs just as the new triathlon season gets into full swing "We would like to thank Kenmare Triathlon Club and all involved in making the annual training weekend such a success and look forward to welcoming everyone back next year," Club Chairman Vincent Kidd said.
Hosted by Valentia Island Triathlon Club, this year's triathlon takes place on Saturday, May 24, at 1.30pm and the afternoon start is significant, as Vincent explains. "This year's start time coincides with high tide giving us various options in the event of inclement weather so we can virtually guarantee that you will get your feet wet."
Each year the proceeds of the Valentia Island Triathlon go to Valentia Island Cottage Hospital and over the last eight years over €100,000 has been raised for the vital community service.
Growing local participation in the popular triathlon led to the formation of Valentia Island Triathlon Club in 2009 and today the club has over 40 members who compete in local and national events.
Places are still available for both single and relay entries for this year's event and online registration is now open at www.sportstiming.ie.
