Foley goal does it for Cromane despite Tydings perfect 10
County NFC, Rd 1
THE 2007 winners were given a tough examination on their return to the competition as Asdee staged a late fight back that saw Cromane thankful for the final whistle at the finish.
The game was dominated on the scoring stakes by both Sean O'Sullivan and Eoin Tydings, both responsible for a combined total of 19 out of the 26 scores on the day. Asdee were good value in the opening period leading by 0-7 to 0-3 coming towards the interval; however a brace from O'Sullivan and a Mike Houlihan effort made the bare minimum all that was between the sides at the break.
Donnachadh Walsh had the sides level after the restart and it was to be the Kerry player who set up Brendan Foley for what would be the decisive goal in the 41st minute. Cromane looked comfortable at 1-13 to 0-9 ahead with seven minutes left but Asdee threw everything at their opponents in the closing stages, four frees from Tydings meaning Foley's goal was all that separated the teams at the final whistle.
Tydings finished with 10 points in total for the home side while O'Sullivan amassed nine of Cromane's total. The two Liams - Walsh and Teahan - along with Emmet Casey had good outings for the visitors while Asdee can take solace from the performances of Kieran Kelly, Darren Russell and Eoin Kennedy in particular.
Another trip north awaits Cromane in the quarter-finals, a trip to Mountcoal to face St Senans.
