AFTER a relatively quiet week on the athletics front our athletes turn their attention to the National Cross-country Championships in Rathoath, county Meath on Sunday next. For the first time in a number of years we will have both a womens and mens team in the senior Inter counties championships.
The women's team will be looking to Laura Crowe, Maria McCarthy and Niamh O'Sullivan for strong runs. Newly crowned county senior cross-country champion James Doran will lead a very well balanced mens team.
Cian Murphy, George McCarthy, Darren Burke, Arthur Fitzgerald and Robert Purcell will all be looking for good runs in what is a most competitive event.
In the Juvenile championships we have a number of young athletes who have qualified to represent Munster following top 12 placings at the provincial championships. Michael O'Leary, Iveragh, Brendan O'Connor, An Riocht, and Shona O'Brien, Spa/Muckross, all had fine individual runs and will be hoping for a continuation of good recent form.
Laura Crowe (An Ríocht) ran an excellent 2-mile third leg for UCC at the Inter varsities road relays in Maynooth on Saturday last.
The team finished and excellent second being just pipped by DCU Grace Lynch (Iveragh) on her first year in college ran a very good two-mile leg for UL who placed fifth overall.
Her Iveragh clubmate Bridget Dennehy who was also having her first Inter-varsity competition ran a fine second leg for UCC 'B' and helped them to 7th place overall.
