Community Games rugby and chess county finals
U-11 Mini Rugby
The final of the U-11 Mini Rugby Final took place at Tralee Rugby Club on Sunday last. Kenmare and Lixnaw were our two finalists and a very exciting match ensued with Kenmare making more of opportunities in first half scoring tries by Mark Casey, Aiden Crowley, Darragh Murphy and Jamie O'Regan with Lixnaw scoring 1 by Padraig Trant.
In the second half, Lixnaw pulled out all the stops to try and get back in the match and reduced the deficit with a try by Eoin Stack. However, Kenmare defence stood firm and closed out the match with a brilliant try by Tommy O'Sullivan to retain their title and win gold medals on a score of 5 tries to 2, with a gallant Lixnaw side getting the silver medals. Kenmare will now represent Kerry at Munster Finals in the UL on July 5.
Thanks to Tralee Rugby Club, Jim O'Connor, co-ordinator, referee Jer Hill and especially the two young teams for providing everything that's good in Community Games - a great competition.
U12 & U16 Chess
We had our Chess County Finals at Na Gaeil GAA Club on Saturday last with good competition in both age groups with winners in both age groups winning their three matches. We had four teams in both the U-12 and U-16 competitions. The four teams in each played round robin - all getting three matches. U12 Results: 1. Spa Fenit/Barrow; 2. Ballyduff; 3. Glenflesk; 4. Knocknagoshel.
U-16 Results: 1. Lixnaw; 2. Milltown/Listry; 3. Glenflesk; 4. Knocknagoshel. Lixnaw retained the U16 title. Spa Fenit/Barrow area were back in competition after a lapse of a few years, and Milltown were competing for their first time in chess. It's great to see areas returning to events and also new areas taking on the challenge of trying a different event.
