All-Ireland basketball title for the 'Sem'

THE boys of St Brendan's College returned to Killarney in a blaze of glory in February 1988 having won the under-19 schools basketball All-Ireland snatching the ACC Basketball Cup from their formidable Cork opponents, the North Monastery (84-78).

Waiting family and friends gave them a rousing reception as their train pulled into town late on the Sunday night and paraded through the streets.

The winning team was captained by Cormac O'Donoghue, Ardshanavooley estate, who is a current Irish under-19 international. Top scorers for St Brendan's were Cormac O'Donoghue (24); Colman O'Shea, Port Road (24); Liam O'Connor, Ross Road (14); Aidan O'Shea, O'Sullivan's Place (12), and Connie O'Leary, Plunkett Street (8).

The rest of the panel consisted of Niall O'Callaghan, The Fáilte Family Inn, College Street; Marcus Cooper, Ardshanavooley Estate; Timmy Looney, College Street; Timmy Leen, Marion Terrace; Simon O'Shea, Ardshanavooley estate; Gerard Flynn, Ardshanavooley, and Eamonn Keogh, Countess Grove Estate.
