FOLLOWING their successful return to this year's national Tidy Towns competition after an absence of many years, the local tidy towns group in Athea is already planning for next year... but your help is vital!
The group has been shortlisted as a recipient in this year's CocoCola Thank You Fund, which aims to support projects and initiatives that are positively impacting on the quality of life of people in communities.
Coca- Cola are investing a total prize fund of €125,000 this year and are looking specifically for organisations that are supporting innovative approaches to the promotion of active lifestyles and are providing significant benefits to groups or the broader community. The overall winner will receive €25,000, with 10 runners up being awarded €10,000 each.
If they are successful, Athea Tidy Towns would use the money to develop a walk along the bank of the River Gale. The walking area, free from traffic and other dangers to pedestrians, would help to highlight the large variety of wildlife and would also enhance the educational environment of the local national school, the group says.
However, in order to be in with a chance of winning, the group needs you to vote. Simply log on to facebook and search for 'CocoCola Thank You Fund: Community'. From there, click on the list of shortlisted projects and cast your vote. The final decision on who receives the grants will be split equally between a public vote and voting from an expert judging panel.
This year, the Athea Tidy Towns comittee were commended by the national judges for their future plans, which were described as 'exciting, ambitious and well thought out.' The active group was also prasied for its enthusiasm, with adjudicators commenting that 'is is really good to have Athea back in the competition.
