WORKS are due to begin this week on a dangerous section of road between Milltown and Castlemaine where over 30 accidents have occurred in three years.
Heffernan's Bend on the N70 was singled out last month out for an allocation of €140,000 for remedial works following an extensive campaign by local residents.
NRA Programme and Regulatory Manager Gary Lynch had confirmed the allocation and work is due to begin this Tuesday. It follows a number of tests by the roads authority with two one-metre sections of road removed and sent for testing by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport.
Minister Leo Varadkar had visited the site during the summer months ahead of the testing and the NRA and Kerry County Council subsequently carried out surface testing and realignment designs.
Works to make safe the section began on Tuesday and Deputy Brendan Griffin said he has been assured that further realignment works will be carried out in the medium term.
The NRA had previously approved an application from the council to apply a reduced speed limit on the section.
