THE upgrade of a busy east Kerry thoroughfare will have to wait a little longer after Kerry County Council's roads section said that there was no funding available under its current programme for strengthening and surfacing works.
Despite this, the R577 Scartaglin to Castleisland road is to be prioritised under an alternative grant programme the Department of Transport.
The section in dire need of major improvement works, an issue that was raised at the recent area meeting by Cllr John Joe Culloty. The councillor said it was an extremely busy road from Kiskeam and Ballydesmond, all the way to Castleisland. Cllr Danny Healy Rae said that all types of lorries and vehicles used the road which has a very bad lag and could result in someone capsizing.
Senior Executive Roads Engineer Padraic Teahan said that there was no funding available under the council's 2012 road works scheme but he then provided a silver lining.
"Maintenance work is to be carried out in the interim to the extent that funding will allow", he added.
