A CANINE version of Long John Silver has been nonchalantly walking the roads in and outside of Knightstown for a few years now.
The dog is a wire haired terrier called 'Jock' and is owned by Pat and Maura Stewart of Knightstown. Pat, who is a retired Irish lights tradesman and Maura, originally from Kiltimagh in Co. Mayo, regularly walks 'Jock' in and around the environs of the village.
The dog lost its hind leg as a result of being knocked down by a vehicle close to the Aldi roundabout in Killarney a number of years ago and a vet had to amputate on the stricken animal there and then. It ended up in the animal rescue centre in Tralee and luckily found a good home in Valentia Island.
In spite of the handicap, the animal walks normally and carefree and is very contented in its island home. Fad saol chuig an madra.
