Three for the price of one from drama group

THEY'RE putting the finishing touches to their forthcoming production and if you thought last year was impressive, then there's even more to look forward to this year as Beaufort Drama Groups returns to the stage.

That's because the mid Kerry group will perform three plays for the price of one and they all premiere in Beaufort Hall next Tuesday evening, December 10.

The three one-act pieces vary hugely both in style and timeline and open to 'In Five Minutes Time', set in a 1970s tenement house on the morning of a wedding. A short two-man play follows, called 'Lunch Break' it's about a chance meeting in a London park in spring of 2007.

Then, following the interval, there's a rip-roaring comedy, 'A Bit of Land', which is set in an Irish farm cottage in 1880 and is about the signing of a will that, let's just say, doesn't go exactly to plan. "The last one is comedy gold and it's one we performed some 28 years ago - I remember it well as I was in it myself and a fair bit younger then too," Director Padraig Clifford recalls with a smile.

That was during the local drama groups first incarnation and it's thanks to Padraig and several other amateur dramatics fans that Beaufort Drama Group reformed last year.

Following a 13 year hiatus they returned with two one act plays: 'The Valiant' and a hilarious version of 'The Corner Shop', all performed to packed houses and standing ovations at Beaufort Community Hall.

It was certainly a successful renaissance and so the crew took little persuasion in regrouping from early October to begin rehearsals for this year's shows.

"I've been researching plays that are as different as possible but will suit our set up and we're now looking forward to the opening night," Padraig added.

"We've all the same cast members as last year and two new additions in Colm O'Shea and Irene McDonald, so it's great to have everybody on board."

Meanwhile, just like last year, the evenings sign off with an apres sketch which promises to be one of the highlights of the night. Last year €2,000 was donated to two charities and the group is confident that a similar amount will be raised this year.

Starting at 8.30pm, the all-important dates are December 10, 11, 13 and 14.
