TRALEE Gardaí are appealing for the public's help after an incident in which two thieves conned their way into an elderly woman's home and robbed her of around €500.
Last Monday the woman, aged in her seventies, was alone at her home in The Meadowlands Estate in Tralee when she was targeted by two thieves who tricked her into letting them into her house.
The two men, one aged in his early to mid twenties with jet black hair and another man in his sixties with grey hair, arrived at the house and managed to con their way inside by pretending to be window cleaners.
One of the men then distracted the woman and kept her occupied downstairs while his accomplice went upstairs and stole a sum of around €500 in cash from a bedroom.
Having robbed the money the men then left the house and fled from the estate in what was described as a small van with a ladder attached to the roof.
Gardaí are currently investigating the robbery and they have appealed to the public to help them in their enquiries into what one Garda called a "nasty, cynical attack on a vulnerable older woman."
Investigating Gardaí are keen to hear from anyone who may recognise the description of the suspects or their vehicle or anyone else who may have been approached or called on by the two men in recent weeks.
The elderly and those living alone have also been encouraged to be vigilant and not to allow anyone they are suspicious of into their home without checking their identification and satisfying themselves that the callers are who they claim to be.
Neighbours are also urged to watch out for the welfare of elderly and potentially vulnerable people living near them and to immediately report any suspicious activity.
