The late Gabrielle McGovern THE death has taken place of Gabrielle McGovern (nee Kiely) Postmistress Tarbert, Co Kerry. Gabrielle was one of a family of 14 (8 girls and 6 boys) and was daughter of the late Dan and Tessie Kiely.
Born in the Garda Barracks on July 28, 1951, Gabrielle attended the local schools in Tarbert. She commenced working in the Post Office in 1966, taking over the position of Postmistress from her mother Tessie from 1982 to 2012.
Gabrielle lived all her life in Tarbert and her position in the Post Office made her known to all generations during these years.
She loved the showband scene during the 60s and 70s and was known personally by various band members during this time through her association with dance halls. Well known throughout Kerry and West Limerick, Gabrielle loved to travel abroad during her holidays. It was on one of these holidays to New York that she met her husband Tommy McGovern. They got married in Dingle on September 13, 2003.
Gabrielle loved to dance and sing and loved life. She bore her illness with great dignity and determination. Unfortunately Gabrielle was pre-deceased by her sister Mary Jo a few days earlier (see right).
