A KERRY county councillor has asked his colleagues to call on the government to abandon 'winter time' and cease from putting the clocks back each October.
Castleisland councillor Bobby O'Connell has said that there are numerous benefits to the move, and has asked members of the council to support his motion and lobby the government not to implement the change in time.
At Monday's meeting of the council, Cllr O'Connell said that longer evenings would result in massive electricity and energy savings for households across the county and would also reduce the number of road traffic accidents which primarily occur during the dark winter evenings.
Cllr O'Connell said that research in the UK has also shown that adandoning 'winter time' and extending daylight hours would provide a huge boost to tourism.
He said that while many believe putting back the clocks is the right move for children going to school in the morning, he added that ' they still have to come home in the dark.'
The matter is to be considered by members.
