A YOUNG Tralee boy scout has been hailed as a hero after he rescued a mother and child who got into difficulty while swimming in West Kerry.
Earlier this month the 1st Kerry Scouts from Tralee were taking part in their annual summer camp in Cloghane. As part of their trip the scout troop visited Jamie Knox's water sport centre in the Maherees on Friday, August 8. As the scouts got ready to take part in their first activity of the day scout troop member Hugo Wells spotted a woman with two young children in difficulty in deep water.
Without a moments hesitation the teenager dived into the water and swam to the frightened woman and children's aid. Hugo took one of the young children on his back – pictured above – and swam to shore with the child while the unidentified mum made her way to shore with the second youngster.
Scout Leader Angela Stack said everyone in the 1st Kerry Scouts are "brimming with pride". She said they didn't get the lady's name, but would like to hear from her if possible.
