SPECTACULAR weather greeted Scottish single-handed 'eco' sailor Alan Rankin as he sailed into Dingle from Falmouth as part of a unique voyage around Ireland and the UK.
Alan's goal is to run 10km for charity in each the 10 ports of call on his voyage do, after only a brief rest last Wednesday, he set off on a run around Dingle in blistering heat in aid of Parkinson's Ireland flanked by members of the Dingle Sailing Club and West Kerry Fitness.
Speaking to The Kerryman Alan, who lives in the Scottish Highlands and was visiting Dingle for the first time, said that he was overwhelmed by the local response, adding that the scenic beauty of the area was quite arresting.
He set out from Dingle on Friday for Broad Haven in Mayo and the last leg of his journey will see him head for St Kilda, returning around the northern tip of the Outer Hebrides.
"My ambition is not just to sail around the UK and Ireland but in doing so leave little or no trace or impact of my voyage," said Alan. "Unfortunately many use the sea as a 'tip' and what is out of sight is out of mind. I would like to think my low carbon, low impact ambition is a positive statement to those who enjoy and make a living from the sea."
"I am passionate about how look after our seas and aim to complete the voyage with not one scrap being thrown overboard and having used only renewable energy. I have also based my food provisioning around suppliers who have strong sustainability values."
