Salmon farm protest plan

KERRY anglers are taking part in a protest march in Cork on Saturday over proposals for a massive salmon farm in Galway they say will decimate the natural salmon and trout population.
Anglers say research shows that up to 39 per cent of wild salmon and sea trout could be wiped out by the presence of the farm on the Atlantic coast of Galway.
The Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers' Association has lodged an objection to the granting of an acquaculture licence and a foreshore licence to proposed salmon farm off Inis Oirr in Galway Bay. If approved, the farm will be the biggest in Europe. Their objection is on the grounds of the danger to Laune salmon 'smolts' from sea lice and sea lice larvae.
