CONNECTICUT based Sacred Heart University (SHU) is looking to buy the former CBS school in Dingle as part of a planned $1 million investment in a college campus in the town.
SHU has had a long-running connection with An Díseart and is understood to have considered buying the old Presentation Convent secondary school building on Goat Street as a base for the students who come to Dingle for a range of course modules
However Seán Pól Ó Conchúir, Director of the SHU Campus in An Díseart, has disclosed that the US University has now placed a bid on the former CBS secondary school and are awaiting a response. He said the board of SHU has already approved a $i million investment in the town.
Mr Ó Conchúir also detailed how they hoped to secure support from Údarás na Gaeltachta and the Department of the Gaeltacht to help with the cost of refurbishment, and that the project was dependent on such support.
"Sacred Heart showed great foresight in coming to Dingle 10 years ago, offering a unique 'study abroad' experience to their students, and it's been a great 10 years. Now is the time to develop our own campus here in Dingle," Mr Ó Conchúir told The Kerryman.
"There are huge potential benefits to the local economy both in terms of additional students coming, also other businesses may be lured to Dingle when they learn that we have a university campus."
"I hope that we get the necessary State assistance to achieve this," he added.
"At the moment students come during the year, not in summer, and probably inject in the region of €500,000 into the local economy. The new development would mean far more students coming over."
Last year SHU announced a joint oceanography initiative with Dingle Oceanworld which was deemed to be very successful.
