WE pledge ourselves to the ideals of the Community Games in a spirit of friendly rivalry.
We shall strive to participate with honest endeavour.
Our aim shall not be victory at any price but we shall genuinely seek to unite our community in friendly sporting competition.
By competing fairly and honestly,we,the children of this community, shall attempt to make our county a happier place in which to live. THE above Community Games pledge was obeyed in all sincerity last weekend as the Kerry athletics finals were held in An Riocht, Castleisland over two days with over 2,500 children entered from every nook and cranny in the county.
Frank Hayes, Director of Corporate Affairs, Denny Kerry Group stated that many famous Irish athletes have competed in the games since its inception in 1968 including Sonia O'Sullivan, Susan Smith, Niall Quinn, John Hayes, Paul O'Connell and our own Colm Cooper to name but a few. These sporting heroes, through their dedication to sport demonstrate just what can be achieved when you take part and work hard at sport.
Over the weekend, the weather conditions can be described as four seasons rolled into two days. On Saturday morning all areas participated in the opening parade and deceased members of Community Games were poignantly remembered including our late Honorary President, Frank Switzer and Tony Looney, our development Officer. Thereafter when Frank Hayes declared the 2012 games open the competition began in earnest, the moment that many children had been waiting for.
All participants competed to their best abilities in their respective heats and quarter-finals with those placed 1st to 4th progressing to Sunday's semi-finals and finals to earn that elusive pass to Athlone in August.
Special mention must be afforded to the children which competed on Saturday, but did not qualify as many went agonisingly close but left with enjoyable memories and will surely only be spurred on to become stronger in future years.
On the Sunday all competitions were exciting, fierce and there were some top class performances which enthralled the large crowd which attended with Dylan O'Sullivan, Killarney South and Brian Sugrue, Cahir-
civeen producing a breathtaking final in the boys Under 16 high jump event and Christine Cooper producing a tactical, sublime performance in the girls Under 14 800m race, just to mention a few.
With nine relay events bringing the 2012 Kerry Community Games Finals to a close there was entertainment provided which left the coaches, parents and neutral observers rooted to the spot with blistering speed, dropped batons and a number of races which any team could have won if only for a bit of luck.
Much thanks have to be afforded to the management and staff of An Riocht Athletics Complex, the countless volunteer's and stewards, the parents, coaches and of course the children, without them, Community Games would be non-existent.
All in all, 2012 has again been an extremely successful, and with the style and panache that many athletes have shown on last weekend it is inevitable that Kerry will again become the leading county at the National Finals in August.
