COUNCILLORS had their say on the upcoming €1.3million in cuts.
What they said: CLLR JOHN BRASSIL "We should write to Minister Hogan and tell him that this is unfair and unreasonable, to have to adjust a budget that was very difficult to pass. It is wholly unacceptable to be asked to do this at this time of the year."
CLLR TOIREASA FERRIS "The minister must replace the Household Charge with a more equitable scheme. I am calling on him to ensure it is based on the ability of the householder to pay and not the marketable value of their property."
CLLR MICHAEL GLEESON "It is regrettable that the government did not have sufficient respect for Local Authorities to allow them gauge the level of the Household Charge. They proceeded in the most ham-fisted of ways to propose this change. They have alienated many good people and annoyed most others."
CLLR BRENDAN CRONIN "We are now being asked to do Minister Phil Hoghan's dirty work by nailing and hitting people who have paid their Household Charge. What's going to happen is that people who paid this year will be distressed by what theyare seeing and will not pay next year."
CLLR NORMA FOLEY "This is a very bleak day. This is the death by a thousand cuts of Local Authorities. It is unworkable and unfair. I am pleading with the Minister to go back to the drawing board. The most vulnerable are being hit."
CLLR PAT MCCARTHY "The day they take away the autonomy of local government is a sad day. The removal of household rates in the 1970s was a retrograde step."
CLLR ANNE MCELLISTRIM "I feel that this is setting a precedent. What will happen next year if there is an increase in the house charge? If less people pay next year because the charge has gone up will our government funding be cut?"
CLLR MICHAEL CAHILL "The real losers are the people of Kerry and in particular the people that have paid their household charge."
CLLR PAUL O'DONOGHUE "We carried this year's Budget in good faith and now we have to adjust it. Seventy per cent of Kerry people who paid up have been told, 'you must pay the price'."
