A CHEQUE for €6,140 was handed over to the South West Counselling Centre (SWCC) this week, the proceeds of a charity raffle which was staged during the Killarney Hoteliers Ball held at The Malton earlier this month.
The impressive sum was certainly boosted by a bumper selection of prizes that had been donated on the night, including a 32 inch flat screen TV and getaways to several blue chip hotels, including Sheen Falls, Parknasilla and Vaughan Lodge in Lahinch.
With €4,140 raised from the raffle, the hoteliers put a further €2,000 towards the funds which were handed over to SWCC Centre Director Geraldine Sheedy on Thursday night with the presentation made by by Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) Kerry branch Chairman Conor Hennigan.
"We raise funds for a different cause each year but this was definitely one of our biggest responses to date and people were encouraged to put a few bob in the envelopes to help out," Mr Hennigan said.
"I believe that the strong response was largely down to the fact that the SWCC is such a local cause and one that aims to counter the issue of suicide that unfortunately has taken grip here in Kerry," he added.
Meanwhile, SWCC wishes to highlight its Kerry LifeLine service which provides support either via a counsellor on the phone or at its drop-in centre next to Arus Pádraig in Killarney between 10am and 5pm during the Christmas break.
