FITNESS is spinning out of control in Listowel!
Listowel Community Centre gym is now struggling to answer the demand for its spinning classes.
While it had just two spinning classes last year, it now has eight to meet the huge appetite for the exercise workout that's growing in town and beyond.
Spinning uses the fixed indoor bicycle machines, putting people through their paces in intensive bursts over periods that last from 40 minutes to an hour.
"The demand is incredible and we're actually hoping to put on another class," Community Centre manager Tony Duggan said.
The gym provide four types of classes, depending on participants desire and fitness levels. Best of all about spinning, as Tony explains, is that it burns more calories while leading to very little impact on joints.
He is a perfect example of the ideal spinner himself. "I have recurring trouble with ankles and knees myself and if I was to play a game of soccer at the moment I'd be injured before I knew it. So I'm delighted with the spinning, I love it and I haven't hurt myself. I don't anyone who got injured on a stationary bike yet, after all!"
Four classes take place on a Tuesday, with another four taking place on Thursdays and the gym are hoping to get a Saturday morning class going shortly. Classes cost €3.50 for Community Centre members and €7 for non members.
