YOUNG boffins from across Kerry put their grey matter to the test last week as they took part in the Kerry Science Teachers' Association Regional Science Quiz.
The quiz, which was held at IT Tralee's South Campus on Thursday, saw 15 teams of sixth years from schools across Kerry come together for a challenging afternoon filled with mind bending science brainteasers.
Teams faced eight six question rounds which covered topics ranging from physics, chemistry and biology to general science.
After eight challenging and exciting rounds the team from Tralee's Presentation Secondary School emerged victorious.
The Presentation team, which included Eleanor Murphy, Mairead Reidy and Aisling Moriarty, received the Kerry Group KSTA perpetual trophy, and each team member also received a certificate and €100 prize money.
Second place on the day went to Presentation Secondary School Milltown whose team comprised of Ciara Stein, Amy Fisher and Aoife Stephens the three Milltown girls left Tralee with three cheques for €50.
Third place went to Darragh Rice, William Maher and Kevin Keane of St Brendans College in Killarney who were each presented with a cheque for €25.
Kerry Group sponsored the prize money and perpetual trophy for the winning team and Aoife O'Brien from Kerry Group presented the prizes to the teams. Presentation Tralee teacher Kathleen Hayes who took on the role of quizmaster said "the questions were incredibly challenging but the students performed incredibly well." The top two teams from the regional final will now go forward to represent Kerry in the National Final of the quiz which will take place in Trinity College Dublin on November 26.
