A NEW venture promoting north Kerry tourism through a selection of special heritage trails was launched in the Tínteán to a great reception on Friday night.
The brainchild of Ballyduff historian Seán Quinlan, North Kerry Heritage Trails will see tourists and visitors given the option of several routes around the region taking them back in time through numerous layers of our history.
North and East Kerry Development funded feasibility studies from which it was decided to establish a number of different trails: a tour of forts, castles and towers; Christianity and spirituality tours of churches, abbeys and cathedrals; heritage tours taking in the museums of north Kerry and other tours exploring War of Independence and Civil War sites.
"Thankfully, the Kerry countryside is richly patterned with ancient settlements and ritual monuments," Mr Quinlan said, adding: "All of these sites are part of our rich heritage and sources of valuable information about our history. Most town lands contain at least one ancient monument, while many contain several."
