DOG owners in Listowel no longer have any excuse for failing to clean up after their pets as new bins go in place across the town.
Five bins have been situated on the John B Keane Road in Listowel and, with the facilities now in place, the town council is warning dog owners who fail to clean up after their pets that they face on-the-spot fines of €150.
"It's a very serious problem, not least as it can lead to some nasty diseases with children playing and falling on dog faeces," Listowel Town Clerk David O'Brien said. "This is part of a countywide push now by all the authorities and make no mistake, we will issue on-the-spot fines."
"Most dog owners in Listowel are conscientious when it comes to cleaning up after their pets but there are a number who continue to let their dogs foul... They can have no excuse in Listowel now as we have bag dispensers in place too."
Simply scoop up the poop and drop it in the bin - that's the message.
Listowel Town Cathaoirleach Maria Gorman said the council and people of the town are no longer prepared to put up dog doo on the streets "as it creates a health hazard and detracts from the beauty of our home".
