A NEW bridge has now been installed over the Athea Road at Abbeyfeale to provide access to the latest 3kms of the Great Southern Trail (GST). To date, 40 kilometres of the GST has been developed between Rathkeale and the Kerry Border, thanks to Limerick County Council and National Cycle Network funding.
To celebrate the opening of the new bridge last Friday, the GST will host the first walk along the new route on Thursday, December 27 at 2.15pm from the old Abbeyfeale Station. The round trip is four miles and refreshments will be provided afterwards at the Railway Bar in Abbeyfeale.
Coach House Travel are providing a complimentary bus at 1.30pm from Rathkeale Old Station (now the Palatine Museum), which will pick up at Ardagh Church at 1.40pm; the Square in Newcastle West at 1.50pm and Templeglantine Church at 2pm. Those travelling by public transport to Abbeyfeale should take the 12.35pm bus from Limerick; 1pm from Tralee or 1.30pm from Listowel
GST chairman Liam O'Mahony said the group is now looking forward to the continuation of the trail to the final terminals at Tralee and Fenit.
