MICKO may have firmly nailed his colour's to Clare's mast for next year's championship battles, however next Easter the GAA legend will lead the O'Dwyer's in the 'Battle of the Clans'.
The novel ' battle' will be just one of a myriad in a week-long programme of events aimed at bringing home the South Kerry Diaspora, and is being organised in conjunction with the national 'Gathering 2013' which takes place next March.
Micko's ' O'Dwyers' will compete against various families compete in sports traditionally associated with South Kerry to win the overall clan cup.
The football battle will involve a blitz-style seven-a-side format with team members playing under their family name.
"'The aim is to create a weeklong event in South Kerry with the primary goal of bringing the South Kerry Diaspora home and also to appeal to the national and international visitor in a celebration of our culture, sports, and heritage.' said Joe McGill, a founding member of the event.
"This event is about creating a sense of place and reuniting families, and in the community of Iveragh, and its environs, the festival aims to involve the local community and make families part of the event," explained event organiser Marita O'Sullivan Hitmiangsong.
"Ask any South Kerry person and they will tell you that the tourist season is now only the 6 weeks of the summer. We want to show that this can be spread out over a longer period of time. Easter week has traditionally been a great time for families meeting up, second only to Christmas, and we aim to enhance this by reuniting South Kerry families," remarked Joe McGill.
