LONG an expert in hurling, Lixnaw star player John ' Tweaky' Griffin has a new-found respect for professionals of a different discipline altogether - ballroom dancing.
Along with dancing partner Jennifer Conway, John captured the title of Lixnaw Strictly Come Dancing winner at a fantastic event in the Ballyroe Heights Hotel on Saturday.
A massive crowd of over 500 gathered amid an electric atmosphere in the hotel for what all agree was a 'fantastic culmination' of a great year. It was held less than a week after Finuge took glory in the Munster intermediate football final.
"I've a new respect for professional ballroom dancers!" John told The Kerryman. "We were training with dance teacher Debbie Driscoll for the last seven weeks and it is a hell of a lot tougher than it looks on television!"
As with the rest of the club, John was blown away with the response to the night as 500-plus gathered in the Ballyroe complete with banners supporting their favourite couples.
"It was unreal and fair play to the lads for organising it, it was just a massive success. One of the best things was that all of the couples really gelled together and we thoroughly enjoyed the last seven weeks of it!" said John.
Club Chairman Sean O'Flaherty said Lixnaw is still celebrating following the success of the night. "It was simply a fantastic culmination to a wonderful year for the club, after Finuge's Munster victory last week. We were over the moon with the night.
"The voting cost €2 per person and the fact that we raised €3,340 shows what the interest was like on the night. It has been great for the village with a good while now as there has been no recession talk in the run-up to Saturday, only high spirits!" he said.
