SHE'S Listowel's Katie Taylor!
That's how Mayor of Listowel, Tom Barry, described Listowel Celtic soccer star Savannah McCarthy at a special civic reception in her honour on Friday.
"Savannah is Listowel's version of Katie Taylor," Mayor Barry said. "Everybody loves Katie Taylor for what she has achieved and the way she carries herself and it's exactly the same with Savannah in Listowel," he said.
Savannah has now twice captained the Republic of Ireland girls' squad - at under-15 level in April and at under-17s level as recently as a fortnight ago. What's more, she has just been announced captain of the under17s side for the European Championships coming up in Belarus shortly.
Savannah also plays Gaelic football for the county and her home club the Emmets.
She attended Friday's civic reception with proud parents Stephen and Theresa.
"One of the greatest things about Savannah is that she has absolutely no airs and graces for someone so talented. I'm a neighbour of hers in Feale Drive and often see her still out kicking football with the younger ones. She's a great example to other teenagers and kids and we're extremely proud of her in Feale Drive and in Listowel," Mayor Barry added.
One of those who has worked the longest with her in sports is Listowel Celtic coach Dominic Scanlon.
"I've been training her since she was seven or eight and she was always a dinger. As she got older she was brilliant with the younger players in training and she is fiercely dedicated. You might have a bad night when only four or five turn up but it will always be Savannah who presses to go out for the hour regardless.
"She's following in her father Stephen's footsteps as he was a great football player and sportsman before her and she shows great leadership always, which the international squad has obviously seen very clearly. We were delighted for her to be recognised and honoured with the civic reception," Dominic added.
