The late Mary Jo Quirke THE DEATH has occurred of Mary-Jo Quirke (nee Kiely) in New York and formerly of Tarbert, Co Kerry, on Sunday August 5. MaryJo, a native of Main Street, Tarbert, migrated to New York in 1961 where she met and married Sean Quirke from Feakle, County Clare.
She worked in Wall Street for some years and then became Secretary at the Visitation Church in Bronx where she was employed for over 20 years.
She was very well known in the parish and was involved in fund-raising for various projects such as the school, golf tournaments and New Year's Eve Dance and other events, all of which play an important role in the lives of the inhabitants of New York.
Mary-Jo provided much needed assistance for the Irish emigrants who went in their thousands to New York during the 1980s by way of arranging accommodation and jobs for the newly arrived women. It was said her door was always open to friend and stranger alike.
Her work was very much appreciated and noted by the Kerrymen's P&B Association by honouring her as Kerry Person of the Year.
Mary made several trips home to Tarbert to see her family. In her later years she was in ill-health but died peacefully surrounded by her family.
She is survived by her husband Sean her two daughters, three sons and fourteen grandchildren.
The family are most appreciative of the sympathy extended to them by the Irish in New York and in particular the Kerrymen's P&B Association who were present in great numbers at William's Funeral Home and at the burial in The Gate of Heaven Cemetery where Mary-Jo was laid to rest. Ar dheis Dé go raibha anam.
