A LISTOWEL man stabbed himself repeatedly with a chisel and only stopped when gardai pepper sprayed him, a district court has been told.
John Somers of Irremore, Listowel, was involved in an altercation with a number of men on April 22 last, and when approached by gardai he took a chisel out of his pocket and first pointed it towards gardai before turning it on himself.
Listowel District Court was told the stabbed himself a number of times, forcing gardai to use pepper spray to stop him.
Mr Somers' solicitor, Maurice O'Sullivan, explained that his client had stopped taking prescription medication for a period and this was what caused him to react the way he did. He said that his client has been on medication since 1989 and sometimes he feels he can do without it, which is clearly not the case.
Commenting on Mr Somers' 14 previous convictions, Mr O'Sullivan said that every couple of years there's ' an incident' when he stops taking his medication but ' he is predominantly a very law- abiding citizen.' He told Judge Mary O'Halloran that Mr Somers will do his level best not to cause a nuisance and would undertake to stay on his medication.
Judge O'Halloran sentenced the 45year- old to two months in prison but suspended it on condition he enter a bond to keep the peace and be of good behaviour for 12 months.
