A LIMERICK man has pleaded guilty to the murder of his baby daughter and ex-partner, as well as two other people, in Newcastle West in November of 2010.

John Geary (33) of Meadow Court, Newcastle West, pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court in Dublin on Monday to the murder of his ex-partner Sarah Hines (25), their five-month-old daughter Amy, her three-year-old brother Reece and Alicia Brough (20) at a house in Hazelgrove, Newcastle West, on November 15, 2010.

The case came before Mr Justice Paul Carney for trial on Monday morning. Counsel for Mr Geary, Mr Hugh Hartnett SC, told Mr Justice Carney however that a jury would not be required. Mr Geary, wearing a light blue shirt and blue jeans, then entered a plea of guilty on the four counts of murder.

The victims were found stabbed to death at the scene and Mr Geary was arrested the day after the discovery and charged with the murder of the four victims.

State Prosecution told Judge Carney on Monday that a period of three weeks would be required in which to prepare victim impact statements. Mr Geary was remanded in custody until July 8 for sentencing.

Ms Hines' family members comforted each other outside the court following the guilty plea in emotional scenes.
