A MAN was seriously injured after he was crushed under the wheels of a tractor on a Lixnaw bog on Friday evening.

Lixnaw man Mike Shanahan, aged in his early 60s, was in a critical state when Listowel Fire Service arrived to the scene on Keel Bog, Lixnaw, after they were called out at 6.30pm on Friday to attend. Mr Shanahan was airlifted to Cork University Hospital by helicopter soon afterwards.

The accident occured at a cutaway, embanked section of bog where Mr Shanahan and another man had been working with the tractor at the time. The Kerryman understands that Mr Shanahan fell from the rear of the tractor on the embankment, seconds before the tractor rolled back over him.

His friend was also injured in the incident after he jumped from the tractor to rush to Mr Shanahan's aid. The tractor continued rolling backwards and fell over the edge of the embankment bringing the man with it. He ended up with one foot trapped under the tractor and the other caught in a step to the cab.

Mr Shanahan is understood to have been crushed in the pelvic region by one of the rear wheels of the tractor as it rolled back over him in the incident. He was airlifted by the Shannon Coastguard helicopter to Cork University Hospital for specialist treatment given the fears over his injuries.

The second man was rushed to Kerry General Hospital with extensive injuries to his legs.
