THE chances of winning a local fundraising lotto once in your lifetime are slim enough, but to hit the jackpot twice is probably unheard of.

Not for Glin couple, Donie and Anne McGrath, however, who scooped over €8,400 in the latest Athea Lucky Numbers draw - six years after winning over €4,000 in the local lotto in Knockanure.

Just days before Christmas, Donie and Anne were on a night out in Brown Joe's Bar in Athea when they bought three tickets for the local lotto. The following day, Donie received a call from lotto representative Domhnall De Barra with the fantastic news that he had scooped the jackpot of €8,300.

Anne explained that she and Donie are regular visitors to Athea, as they too sell their local lotto tickets in the area and have always returned the favour by buying tickets in support of Athea. Having won the Knockanure lotto in 2006 with set numbers they had used for years, the couple then opted to pick random numbers in future draws.

"We couldn't believe it when Domhnall called to say we had won," Anne told The Kerryman. "I reckon Donie must have a lucky streak because he also won the top prize of a weekend away to Galway at an ICA fundraiser in Knockanure last September."

While some of the winnings were enjoyed over the Christmas period, Anne says the money will be spent wisely, as both she and Donie have been unemployed for the past four years. She is hoping, however, to splash out on a holiday, perhaps to London or the US
