SCORES of locals availed of a special initiative at CH Chemists offering free diabetes tests on Thursday in a massive response to the pharmacy's World Diabetes Day campaign.

"Diabetes is growing at an alarming rate largely due to an increase in sedentary lifestyles," CH Pharmacist Peter Harty told The Kerryman.

Up until recent decades the typical Irish lifestyle was largely marked by physical activity and limited consumption. That's all changed with people now having a much less physical lifestyle and in many cases a lack of regular exercise while, at the same time, there's an ever-growing choice of cheap and convenient foods we're only too keen to consume.

CH Chemist's event was run in conjunction with the Diabetes Federation of Ireland who were on hand to carry out the tests and advise people on everything from how best to avoid developing diabetes to the optimal ways to cope with the condition.

"Dietary changes and regular physical exercise are key. Of particular danger is a diet full of high-calorific foods like sugars and carbohydrates," Peter Harty explained. "Cutting back on these is crucial and it is recommended to exercise for a minimum of 30 minutes every day also."
