Listowel presses on with taxi plan

LISTOWEL hackney drivers are fearing the worst for their future this week as the town council presses ahead with plans to install taxi ranks in the town.
Listowel Town Council has indicated that it intends to pass special taxi rank bye laws. A draft of the bye-laws is available under the public consultation period required and the authority has already received one objection.
There are 30 hackney drivers in Listowel and if taxi ranks are installed, they fear the influx of taxi drivers from around the county will put them out of business.
However, the Listowel Joint Policing Committee (JPC) has recommended taxi ranks be created in a bid to get people off the streets as quickly as possible when pubs and clubs close at the weekend.
