THE North Kerry Final is set to headline three days of sporting action in Listowel as the town prepares to host its inaugural Christmas Sporting Festival.
Football, cycling, soccer, rugby, walking events and much more are taking place over three days on Christmas week in a bid to increase fitness and bring much-needed business into town on what is ordinarily one of the quietest weeks of the year.
Sponsors of the festival, the local vintners have secured a 2am bar exemption across town for each night of the sporting celebration. "We're really looking forward to Christmas week now in town as the festival is promising to ensure a very busy week in a great way to bring the whole community together," one of the organisers Christy Walsh said.
"We're excited that the North Kerry Senior Football Championship between Duagh and Beale is to headline the whole festival," Mr Walsh added.
The festival starts on Wednesday, December 26, with a 5km walk being organised by the Listowel Strollers' Club; continuing with a family rugby event, a ten-mile cycle with the local cycling club and a Listowel Celtic A versus B match.
The festival wraps up on Friday with a soccer blitz in Tanavalla and the annual Brendan Guiney Memorial Football match at the Frank Sheehy Park, where the Listowel Emmets' senior team will take on a selection from north Kerry.
Collectors will be going around at all events to take donations for Listowel Hospice at each fixture.
