A WELL-known musician will have to pay €1,000 to the Dingle District Court poor box if he wants to escape a conviction after he was caught driving without insurance in the town last March.
Ronan O'Snodaigh - of the band Kila and a brother of Sinn Féin TD Aengus O Snodaigh - was before Judge James O'Connor on Friday charged with driving without insurance at Glens, Dingle, on March 11 of this year.
Mr O'Snodaigh, of Ard Aoibheann, Muiríoch, Baile na nGall, pleaded guilty to the charge saying that he had inadvertantly taken a car he had just bought down from Dublin so his girlfriend could have a car while in the capital.
"You drove it all the way from Dublin and got caught in Dingle!" Judge O'Connor observed to some mirth in the courtroom.
Mr O'Snodaigh was directed to begin paying the €1,000 to the court poor box by November 23 next if he wants to avoid a conviction. "It will be adjourned then until later next year, but if you turn-up with a fiver that will be a joke," Judge O'Connor explained to Mr O'Snodaigh who represented himself.
