THEATRIX is the name of the new drama school in town taking scores of school-goers to a new level of enjoyment of the stage and all it encompasses.
It marks the return of teacher Jo Jordan to child and teen dramatics and is her first dedicated school, with classes taking place in the Plaza as of last week on Wednesday and Thursday. Jo is one of the greatest encouragers of young talent in the town and played a key role in the revival of the Christmas panto. She's been teaching drama in Listowel for the past 12 years.
Jo is also starting her hugely-popular Baby Boogie classes, which see parents dancing and singing with their tots, at the Family Resource Centre.
"I've just started up my own theatre school called Theatrix and I've already got a massive level of interest. The Wednesday and Thursday classes at the Plaza are full and I'm actually hoping to get a Tuesday class going soon to cater for the demand."
Theatrix is for children aged from 5 years of age to 18 and will see the whole school doing an end-of-term play each semester.
"We're doing Scrooge at Christmas and we're really looking forward to it. Apart from anything else, the drama classes are brilliant for children and teens' confidence. One mother recently told me her girl was very shy and she can't believe it already how much she has come out of herself, Theatrix is helping her with her reading, her outlook and everything. She says her daughter is like a different child!"
Meanwhile, Baby Boogie will do for tots what Theatrix does for older children. "It is great for helping children with their speech and their co-ordination through playing instruments and dancing." Baby Boogie starts at the Family Resource Centre on Tuesday, October 2, next from 10.30am until 11.30am. For more info ring Jo on (087) 6104224 or the centre on (068) 23584.
