Elaine Clifford from Keel, Castlemaine and her husband, Michael Jones, from Loughbrin in Blackwater near Kenmare took first and second plass overall in their Masters in Education through Irish course at NUI Galway.

The couple married in 2004 and both work as teachers in Cork. The two year course took place every second weekend in Galway and the Kerry couple completed the course while also holding down their full time jobs.

"It was a huge undertaking to travel the four and a half hour journey from Cork to the West Galway Gaeltacht area of 'An Cheathrú Rua' to attend the course," Elaine said. "Although challenging, it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience and we will now be able to apply the information gathered to our work."

Among those to help the couple celebrate their remarkable results at the graduation in Galway were Elaine's parents Alice and Peter Clifford of Gorthaleen in Keel.
