Jolanta and Enrika laid to rest in Lithuania

ALL thoughts in Killorglin on Monday were of Jolanta Lubiene (27) and her eight-year-old daughter Enrika who were laid to rest following a funeral service close to Jolanta's hometown in Lithuania.

Over three weeks after they were brutally stabbed to death in their home in Langford Downs, Killorglin, the victims' extended family could finally pay their respects following the tragic saga. The links with their adopted Killorglin home were evident throughout the service, particularly as a picture of Enrika in her Scoil Mhuire uniform was on display.

Marius, Enrika's father and Jolanta's husband, wept as he held his daughter's toy dog and a Gregorian chant sung by retired bishop Juozas Siurys accompanied the traditional Lithuanian service.

Mourners had gathered at the gates of the rural church over an hour before the service held in Gadunavas, 10km away from the family home. Shortly before midday the church bell rang as the funeral procession arrived, led by two black vans, each carrying a white coffin. As a brass band played, the coffins were lifted into the church and placed before a wooden altar, a pink rosebud heart at each coffin.

Following the Catholic service, Bishop Siurys sprinkled the coffins with holy water as mourners held wreaths of white flowers - Jolanta's coffin was placed first followed by her young daughter's. Each member of the family put the single white rose they had been holding onto the coffins and Marius kissed the toy he had been holding and laid it in his daughter's grave.

Jolanta's mother, Ramute, was last to leave as she rearranged the flowers left by mourners.

The funeral service follows a special memorial service held in Killorglin two weeks ago which was attended by almost 2,000 people and was led by the Scoil Mhuire choir.
