THE Kerry branch of a newly formed scout group has held its inaugural meeting.

The Kerry Board of Scouting Ireland was formed after the two previous national governing bodies, Scouting Ireland SAI and the Catholic Scouts of Ireland, amalgamated at the end of 2003.

At Friday’s meeting, which was held in the scout hall in Tralee, local man Jimmy O’Connor was elected as Commissioner for Kerry.

Other officers chosen included Fossa man John O’Toole, who becomes Chairman, Moira O’Herlihy from Tralee who will be the Treasurer and Marion Hurley, also from Tralee, who assumes the post of Secretary.

Mr O’Connor now has responsibility for about 1,000 scouts across the county, but he has a clear vision for the future and has pledged to be true to what he termed “the ideals of scouting.”

However, he stated that his immediate aim will be ensure that the merger of the two organisations is completed smoothly.
