KERRY would be mourning a double tragedy this week but for the brave actions of a 14-year-old who put himself at risk to save two children from certain death after they were swept out to sea by a rip tide.

Young Billy Cronin was this week hailed as a hero in the Maharees for saving a brother-and-sister from drowning in Brandon Bay. His dramatic rescue took place on Wednesday last when he was bodyboarding at 'The Dumps' strand and spotted the children in trouble in heavy surf.

Billy was the only person anywhere close to the struggling children at the time and luckily for the pair he just happens to be a member of the Irish body-boarding under-16 squad as well as a trainee lifeguard.

He got to them within seconds, getting the boy onto a body board and keeping the girl's head out of the water. "I genuinely thought they were goners and the girl in particular had only seconds to spare," Billy told The Kerryman.

Holidaymaker Tom Kennedy also joined in the rescue and the siblings were safely brought back to shore to be reunited with their father, who had seen the drama unfold.
