AN EIGHT-year-old girl had a miracle escape from a horrific car crash near Killarney on Monday which claimed the life of her mother who had been driving.
Tributes were being paid to mother-of-four Susan von der Geest (47), from Reen, Killorglin, who was pronounced dead at the scene after her vehicle skidded off the road at Gortroe and collided with trees following heavy rain before lunchtime.
Eight-year-old Louisa was a back seat passenger in the Ford Fiesta but escaped with minor injuries that included a laceration to her head. She received stitches and was recovering on Tuesday in Kerry General Hospital.
The Douglas NS pupil was comforted by passer-by Denise Tangney from Listry, who rushed to the vehicle, staying with Louisa and reassuring her as they waited for an ambulance.
The vehicle had been travelling in the Killarney direction and there had been a heavy downpour prior to the incident but it has not been confirmed if this was a factor. Gardaí are asking witnesses to contact them.
Originally from Dornbusch, Germany, Susan had lived in the Killorglin area for almost 20 years with life-partner Donal Moroney, who was at home with the couple's three other children at the time of the accident.
