TRALEE Gardaí have recovered a shotgun which was stolen from a house in the Lixnaw area last week in what is believed to have been a targeted burglary aimed expressly at stealing the weapon. The firearm, which was discovered in the Kielduff area on Friday, had been stolen from an isolated house in the Lixnaw area the previous Saturday while the homeowners were out.

Burglars broke into the house and ransacked a number of rooms in order to locate a safe that the gun had been stored in and to find a key for the safe which had been hidden elsewhere in the property.

No other items were stolen and the nature of the robbery has led gardaí to believe that the thief or thieves had broken in solely with the intention of stealing the shotgun.

An investigation was immediately launched and searches were carried out in the Lixnaw area. On Friday the weapon was recovered after it was spotted hidden in a ditch in the Kielduff area by a passerby.

The gun had been wrapped in blankets and placed amongst undergrowth close to a roadway though it is understood it had not been well hidden and would have been relatively easy for a pedestrian to see.

No arrests have been made in connection with the break in or the discovery of the weapon and anyone with information is encouraged to contact Tralee Garda Station.
