AMIDST widespread rumours that an unidentified man tried to lure a young boy into a car in Tralee over the weekend gardaí say they have not received any official complaint about the alleged abduction attempt.

Since the weekend various social media sites including Twitter, Facebook and other online forums have been filled with stories about an attempted child abduction in the Kevin Barry's area of Tralee on Sunday evening.

According to various posts a young boy, aged under ten, was playing with friends in the estate on Sunday evening when a bearded man driving what was described as a black sports car pulled up near the group of children.

The man is then alleged to have asked the boy to get into his car claiming that he knew his father and had been sent to pick him up so that the youngster could go and collect a new sports jersey.

Apparently when the boy became suspicious and refused to get into the car the man left the scene.

Although various reports of the incident claim that gardaí were informed of the alleged abduction attempt, and that a suspect had been identified, when contacted by The Kerryman on Tuesday gardaí at Tralee Garda Station said they were not aware of the incident and that no official complaint has been made regarding the allegations.

Gardaí said they would investigate the allegation as a matter of urgency.
