A HUGE group of friends of the late Paudie Fitzmaurice have formed themselves into a committee and have organised a memorial weekend in his honour.
Paudie, a well known local taxi operator and a native of Brosna, was taken tragically in a road traffic accident a couple of miles outside Castleisland on the Scartaglin Road in the early hours of Sunday morning of May 27 this year.
He was returning to Castleisland after dropping people off in the Scartaglin area when tragedy struck and took him from his wife Mary and young family of four children.
The popularity of the man drew people to him and his group of friends are now taking the opportunity to organise this weekend of activity to honour his memory.
The programme for the weekend will include a raffle for valuable prizes on the November 1 Horse Fair Day in Castleisland. On Friday, November 2 the action moves to the River Island Hotel and there the Paudie Fitzmaurice Memorial Dance will be held. Tickets for this event are priced at €10 each. Music will be supplied by the ever popular, O'C Trio and they will be followed by a disco.
The Paudie Fitzmaurice Memorial Tractor Run will leave the square in his native village of Brosna on Sunday November 4 at 1pm. The parade of tractors will proceed towards Castleisland where it will do a lap of the town before finishing at Cordal Community Centre. There will be light refreshments and entertainment for all participants. Tractors of all makes and vintage are asked to take part in the run and the entry fee is set at €10.
