IT was a training day that's set to see more lives saved in north Kerry over the coming years as members of the Listowel Fire Service went on manoeuvres with the Coast Guard in a dramatic display that drew a crowd of onlookers.

Listowel Chief Fire Officer Paul O'Sullivan said the exercise was an extremely important opportunity to get experience working with the Coast Guard's new Sikorsky helicopter

The Listowel team are first responders to fires and car accidents in the region and they frequently call on the assistance of the Shannon-based Coast Guard chopper to get seriously injured people to hospital for urgent life-saving treament.

"We got the chance to work with the fantastic new helicopter in what was a very worthwhile exercise," Mr O'Sullivan said. "It gave us the chance to see it up close and practice getting people onto it quickly is an important drill that will benefit emergency responses to accidents greatly."

Officers practiced getting patients on board using stretchers and the helicoptor winch during the manoeuvre that was conducted just outside Listowel.
