SOME of the country's top music acts including the dynamic duo Jedward are to get Ballybunion hopping in just a few weeks' time.
The Atlantic Sessions, so named as they take place on the site of the old Atlantic Hotel, are expected to draw a crowd of thousands to Ballybunion for the ten days of the music festival, which runs from August 8 —17.
Jedward are creating most of the excitement in the run-up to the festival, for obvious reasons after the boisterous twins represented the country at the Eurovision Song Contest.
Also appearing at the sessions are the Republic of Loose, Lloyd Daniels, Gemma Hayes, The Wolfe Tones, 2FM DJ Jenny Green, Fish Go Deep, Liam O'Connor, Declan Nearney, Conal Gallon, the Clonmel Marching Brass Band and many more.
But it's not only the music acts that are set to draw big crowds. On the night of the Leaving Cert results, the Sessions will be illuminated for what's billed as the 'Biggest UV' party. The Sessions will also feature a 'silent disco' – Electric Picnic – where people can bring their own music and listen through earphones while dancing away.
One on-street highlight of the festival will be a special twins parade led by Jedward through the streets of Ballybunion. It is hoped the parade will set the record for the biggest gathering of twins, triplets and quads ever seen in Ireland.
Meanwhile, pig-racing, street entertainment, beach tag rugby, hula hoop contests and Brazilian Capoeira performances are being put on to provide constant family entertainment.
"Destination Ballybunion will stage this event which will see thousands descend on the seaside town for the last summer session. The town has really developed its tourism brief as a family destination," organiser Maura Hanrahan said. Visit www. destinationballybunion.ie for further information or call (068) 28003.
