DINGLE is Ireland's second best destination to visit according to the world's most popular travel website, TripAdvisor.com.

The travel review website, which is used by millions people around the world, released the names of the winners of their Travellers' Choice Awards 2013 last Friday.

For the second year in a row Dublin has come out on top in the list followed by Dingle in second place. Kerry features three times in the top ten in total with Killarney in third and Tralee in eighth place.

Despite losing out on the top spot to the Dubs, Dingle Peninsula locals were ecstatic upon hearing the news.

"This award really echoes what Failte Ireland said about Dingle a while back, that it may be a long way to go to visit, but it's worth it," said Katharine Keane of Dingle Business Chamber.

"We also have to acknowledge the efforts of all the people that run the many events and festivals on the Dingle Peninsula throughout the year," John Sheehy added, "it takes a huge community effort."

"The quality of food, accommodation and everything else also comes into play but we can't rest on our laurels and have to work even harder to make sure we keep things going and keep driving forward," said Ristead MacLiam, also of the Dingle Business Chamber.

"Those involved in the tourism industry around the Dingle Peninsula are delighted that people are being properly looked after as this award reflects people's honest opinions," Danno O'Keeffe added.

"It's a vote of confidence from the people themselves which is very important."

TripAdvisor's top ten Irish destinations for 2013 are: Dublin (1), Dingle (2), Killlarney (3), Galway (4), Cork (5), Limerick (6), Westport (7), Tralee ( 8), Kilkenny (9) and Blarney (10).

The winners are compiled from millions of reviews and votes cast by people who draw from their travel experiences and share feedback on TripAdvisor.

It's not the first time the peninsula has received international attention; in 2008 TripAdvisor.com listed Dingle among its top twenty destinations in the world.

Since then Dingle has continued to feature strongly in TripAdvisor's rankings and awards.
